‘Sal Lavallee’ from ‘Bogong Moth Art and Holistic Services’, is an Ngarigo Buhlung (Ngarigo woman) from the Ngarigo and Yuin nations. Ngarigo is her Grandmothers country from the Snowy Mountains Region NSW through to Victoria and Yuin from her Grandfathers country South Coast NSW.
Currently based in Campbelltown NSW, Sal pays her respects to the Dharawal people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which she lives, works and loves.
Sal is an Artist, a qualified Meditation Therapist, Holistic Counsellor, experienced workshop facilitator, Transpersonal Art Therapist student, Ritualist and an Experienced Cultural Art Therapist.
Sal’s art is inspired by traditional Ngarigo and Yuin art that was taught to her by her elders but her interpretation and style is very contemporary. Inspired by stories from her Grandmothers and Grandfathers country and her own spiritual experience and understandings.
In 2012 Sal was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, art and meditation gave her a way to connect to her Aboriginal spirituality and cope with the mental and physical stresses of cancer treatment and being stuck in an isolated hospital room for many months. It allowed Sal to tell her story, connect to her culture and leave a legacy. This has given Sal deep insight into the therapeutic benefits of art, it has led her to learning art therapy, meditation therapy, and holistic counselling.
Sal loves to use many different mediums but she predominantly uses acrylic paint on high quality artist paper or canvas and also uses photography for her popular mixed media series of works “Ngarigo Nulla Goongee” that explores the theme of connection to country.
